Budapest School for the Blind

In Hungary the first school for the blind started operating in 1825. Since then, this is the only state school for blind children. The institute is located in Budapest. It provides services to 220 students between the age 3 and 23.

The school history dates back to the 19th century and was a traditional blind school for many decades with only students with normal intelligence. The situation has changed dramatically in the last 15-20 years. Now 70 percent of our students are MDVI (multiply disabled visually impaired) and a high rate of those has additional impairments like motor problems, hearing

difficulty, behavioural problems, eating or feeding disorder, autism etc.

The institute provides the following services:

  • Kindergarten and Pre-school
  • Primary school grade 1- 8
  • Vocational Training School (Trades that can be chosen are computer operator, carpet-maker, pottery maker, baker and kitchen assistant.)
  • Methodology Institute and Resource Centre for integrated children
  • Boarding School/Dormitory
  • Children’s Home

Our vocational training school was established in the 1990s. We currently teach six professions. Students can choose from handicraft professions (carpet weaver, basket weaver, pottery maker), baker’s assistant, cook’s assistant and computer operator training. Our students are between 14 and 25 years old. We accept visually impaired, intellectually disabled, mildly physically disabled and autistic young people. The number of our students is currently 92, and 32

employees deal with them: special education teachers, specialist teachers, assistants, rehabilitation teachers and physiotherapists.
